Perfect for:
Nature-loving families, couples, groups, and single travelers in search of a rustic eco-lodge that allows them to explore the remote rainforests and turtle-nesting beaches of Tortuguero in a comfortable setting.
What to Expect at Mawamba Lodge:
- Easy Access to Tortuguero Village. Unlike many Tortuguero eco-lodges located across the canal/lagoon, Mawamba is on the same side as the village, meaning you don't have to rely on boats to get there.
- Direct Beach Access. Mawamba Lodge offers direct access to the Caribbean turtle nesting beaches that make Tortuguero so famous. Please note that swimming is NOT allowed here, due to strong currents. There is, however, a pool to use.
- Accessibility only by boat or air. Mawamba Lodge, like all Tortuguero destinations, is not accessible by road. You must board a boat or a plane to get here as part of the adventure.
What Not to Expect:
- Nightlife and City Activities. Tortuguero is a remote rainforest region, cut off from the rest of Costa Rica. Although there are a few bars and restaurants in Tortuguero Village, a 1.5-mile walk from the hotel, this is a place for eco-tourists and nature lovers.
- TVs and A/C. This is an eco-lodge focused on sustainability and removing everyday noise from your stay, so no TV or A/C in your room.
- Extreme Luxury. Mawamba Lodge is a comfortable and upscale eco-lodge in Tortuguero, but expect more rustic and cozy comforts rather than world-class luxury.

Escape to the Rainforest at Mawamba Lodge
Located on a strip of land between the Caribbean Sea and the canals of the Tortuguero National Park, Mawamba Lodge is a beachfront eco-lodge located in the heart of the park. This also means it’s accessible only by boat or plane, so getting here is an adventure in itself. This rustic retreat, surrounded by lush vegetation, provides a comfortable yet upscale rainforest experience for nature-loving families, couples, single travelers, and groups.
With 54 rooms, Mawamba Lodge features a range of comfortable bungalows tailored to different needs and budgets, all equipped with private terraces and ceiling fans. Some bungalows offer ocean views, while others are surrounded by the adjoining rainforest. The accommodations are furnished to be cozy while boasting only the essentials, and they include mosquito nets and hammocks for nighttime relaxation.
Unwinding in the Pool & Exploring Nature
Other amenities at Mawamba Lodge include a refreshing outdoor pool, located next to the main restaurant. This entire pool area has WiFi and is a perfect place to relax when not exploring Tortuguero. And speaking of exploring, activities here include the famous nature boat trips through the rainforest canals, wildlife watching, guided hikes, kayaking, canoes, turtle-nesting excursions, and more.
With a privileged location, Mawamba is tucked in a narrow stretch of land, with a natural canal on one end and the beach on the other. It’s easy to walk to either end, but while visiting the beach, it’s best not to swim in the Caribbean Sea. Swimming here is not recommended due to strong currents.
Top Costa Rican Cuisine & Commitment to Sustainability
The lodge's La Mararela Restaurant serves a delicious a la carte menu of Costa Rican cuisine made with fresh, local ingredients. There is also a bar at the pool serving light lunches and drinks. And there is always Katonga: a floating restaurant that navigates the local rainforest canals while you eat. It’s truly an experience! Admire all the unique views of Tortuguero while enjoying a hearty meal.
Mawamba Lodge is committed to environmental sustainability, employing a biodigester to treat sewage and produce methane gas for cooking. Some 30% of the lodge's gas usage is derived from this eco-friendly system. The lodge also goes a step further by supporting local communities and encouraging guests to participate in their "5 Minute Beach Clean Up" program.
