Trogon Lodge: Quiet Mountains & Birdwatching
Located two-and-a-half hours south of San José, Trogon Lodge sits some 7,000 feet high in the mountains of San Gerardo de Dota, near the Los Quetzales National Park. Trogon is a rustic, 25-room cloud forest eco-lodge, perfect for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
The main lodge sits on a hillside, with its various cabins scattered among the gardens and offering views of the Savegre River and surrounding cloud forests. This area is home to an incredible variety of plants and animals, making it a truly magical place to stay.
Cozy Cabins in the Forest
The cabin rooms are cozy and comfortable, featuring wood-paneled walls, private balconies, and comfortable beds where you can rest after a day of exploring the outdoors. Some rooms are closer to the restaurant and main lodge, while others are higher up in the forest, with more privacy and secluded views. Due to the cool climate in these mountains, air-conditioning is not needed, and each room features a gas-operated heating unit instead. Other in-room amenities include porches with rocking chairs where you can spend a lazy morning or afternoon.
To focus on nature, sustainability, and relaxation, the rooms at Trogon do not have WiFi, TVs, or telephones. This is the place you go to get away from the bustling lifestyle of the city, immersing yourself in nature to reconnect with yourself.
Farm-to-Table Dining & Homemade Bread
Common areas at Trogon Lodge include the El Quetzal Restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The restaurant has a view of the hotel's own trout ponds, and these tasty fish often feature on the menu as part of the lodge’s farm-to-table concept. Other home-grown ingredients include fresh garden vegetables, local fruits, marmalades, and homemade bread. You’re truly tasting the best local flavors, often brought daily from the lodge’s surroundings. The bar is where guests gather to play pool and socialize with drinks after a day exploring the cloud forests. There is also a lounge area with a library, table games, and DVDs to enjoy. WiFi is available in these common areas.
Birdwatching in the Cloud Forests of San Gerardo
The reason to come to Trogon Lodge is to experience the cloud forests of Costa Rica and the birds and animals that live in them. The lodge has two self-guided nature trails on its property for guests to explore. Other guided tours are available here, including the lodge's signature Quetzal Quest tour, which takes guests on a quest to find these beautiful and elusive birds.
The area features over 170 species of birds including flycatchers, hummingbirds, trogons, and more. Even if you don’t spot a quetzal, you won’t regret the trip because of its abundance of species to spot and the beauty of the trails. Other birdwatching tours are available plus other cloud forest hikes in nearby national parks and reserves.
