Why Visit San Gerardo de Dota
San Gerardo de Dota sits at the foothills of the Talamanca Mountains. It’s not too far from San Jose and it's a different world than Costa Rica’s beaches regarding temperature, nature, and activities. Moss-covered trees make the perfect backdrop for selfies. The area is best for those who enjoy being in the great outdoors, don’t mind a bit of cold and rain, and would be thrilled to find some hidden natural gems.
Here are some reasons why it's worth checking out:
- Birdwatching Hotspot: The elusive Resplendent Quetzal has been sought after. Only in this region can it be spotted year-round. If you're lucky, you may also see the Scooty Robin, Acorn Woodpecker, Flame-colored Tanager, and Volcano Hummingbird.
- Fishing: Especially trout fishing, is popular in the area. As a result, you’ll find that most restaurants serve fish caught that same day locally.
- The Los Quetzales National Park: The park alone has three types of forests and 14 ecosystems to explore, each with its own set of flora and fauna species to get to know.
