Why Visit Los Sueños, Herradura?

Los Sueños Resort, on Costa Rica's Central Pacific Coast, opened in 2000 and boasts a championship 18-hole golf course and Costa Rica's first marina. The marina has turned Herradura and Los Sueños into the sportfishing capital of Costa Rica, with various international competitions every year.
Why we love Playa Herradura and Los Sueños:
  • For Sports Enthusiasts: Especially if their enthusiasm is fishing and golf. It's possible to play around on a tropical course and catch a marlin on the same day while staying here.
  • Best of Both Worlds: Playa Herradura and Los Sueños are quiet and laid back. But if you crave some action, and lots of bars, restaurants, and surf, then Jaco is a few minutes' drive away.
  • Adventure: Playa Herradura and Los Sueños have easy access to two national parks (Manuel Antonio and Carara) and activities including zip lining, rafting, and more.

Where to Stay

You can stay in Los Sueños itself, of course! The place comprises some of the most exclusive private vacation rentals in Costa Rica.

Best Time to Travel to Playa Herradura / Los Sueños

This is one of those parts of Costa Rica where there truly is no wrong time to travel. The easy access to San Jose and SJO International Airport make getting here a breeze, no matter what time of year you come.

You'll find the best weather from December to April when you can expect hot, sunny days with less humidity than the rainy season of May-November. But here, in Costa Rica's Central Pacific, even the rainy season is good.

If you're looking for peace and quiet, it might be worth avoiding Christmas and Easter when the whole coast gets packed out, but other than that, you'll be okay.

Travelers coming for the fishing might want to check what's biting when fishing out of Los Sueños. The sportfishing here is pretty consistent all year, although September and October aren't as good as other months (you're better off fishing in Guanacaste in September/October). January and February are the best fishing months in the Central Pacific.

The Weather in Playa Herradura / Los Sueños

Temperatures in Playa Herradura don't change much throughout the year. So you can expect it to hover around the early-to-mid 80s F (late 20s/early 30s C) year-round. The only question is if it's raining or not.

The Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica gets the most rain in September and October when things get a little damp. Outside of these months, you can expect sun in the mornings with a shower in the afternoon from May to August and November/December. Then hot, glorious sunshine the rest of the time. Don't be surprised if you catch a shower on any random day, though - it's the rainforest down here.

Is Los Sueños Safe?

Playa Herradura and Los Sueños are both safe with low crime rates. In addition, Los Sueños itself has 24/7 guards on duty. But they don't have much to do in terms of fighting crime.

If you go to Jaco one evening, you should take the usual precautions to stay safe, but even here isn't what you'd call dangerous. During the day, be smart and don't leave your things on the beach.

How to Get to Los Sueños / Herradura

Juan Santamaria Airport (Airport Code SJO) in the Central Valley city of Alajuela, outside the capital of San José, is the closest international airport to Los Sueños.

Distance & Driving Time to Los Sueños

From San Jose: 52 miles (84 kilometers), about 1.5 hours

Our Costa Rican Vacations packages include an airport "meet and greet" service and private transfers with English-speaking drivers. Once you're through customs and immigration, all you need to do is get into the van and relax!

If you're renting a car, make sure you allow yourself an hour to get the paperwork sorted, and then find your way to Ruta 27 via Coyol. Expect to pay around $8 in tolls - payable only in Costa Rican currency, so make sure you have some colones on you before heading out of the airport.

Ten miles after you get off the highway following the exit to Jaco, stop on the Tarcoles River Bridge, where you can check out dozens of crocodiles from the road. From there, follow the signs to Jacó.

Before Jacó, you'll come to a big sign for a supermarket called AutoMercado. That's the turnoff to Playa Herradura and Los Sueños. If you're staying in a rental at Los Sueños, you could stock up on some supplies before arriving at the resort - it's just a couple of minutes from the supermarket.
