Adventure
Extreme
There's a typical school of thought in Costa Rica that Guanacaste is all about the beach. It's the part of Costa Rica you visit for downtime, to relax by the pool or the ocean. The part of Costa Rica you go to for surfing and fishing rather than the jungle pursuits you find elsewhere.
There's some truth to that, and many people split their vacations between the rainforest and the beach, using their time in the rain forest to hike, zip line, go rafting, and all of the other adventure activities you associate with a Costa Rican vacation. And then they go to a resort or beach town in Guanacaste to relax. That's all well and good, and there's nothing wrong at all with this kind of vacation.
But it's also possible to do much of the "adventure stuff" in Guanacaste itself. So travelers who want to spend their entire vacation on the beach needn't miss out on all the good stuff, and if they visit one of Guanacaste's adventure parks, they don't need to travel very far, either.
We offer three different combination adventures in Guanacaste, all guaranteed fun for the family. The Buena Vista and the Guachipelin combos are in the Rincon de la Vieja National Park and the Diamante Eco Adventure Park near Playa Matapalo on the coast between Flamingo and Hermosa. So let's take a look at these additional days out.

Adventure Parks Is Featured in These Trips
Here are some of the combo trips we recommend you to check out if you want to experience Adventure Parks:
Buena Vista Combo Tour
The Buena Vista Canopy and Natural Spa tour is a great adventure and relaxation day rolled into one. We'll pick you up from your hotel or rental home after breakfast and drive you to the Rincon de la Vieja area.
A short hike takes you to the canopy zip line on tree platforms. There are nine zip cables ranging from 150 to 400 feet long, allowing you to view the dry forest differently.
Then you'll mount well-fed, well-behaved horses and ride to the natural spa to enjoy the rejuvenating thermal hot springs and steam mud baths heated up courtesy of the active Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. These hot springs and mud baths are known for their natural healing properties. So go ahead and lather yourself in the volcanic mud and take a dip in the thermal mineral waters. And after that, it's adventure time again with some fun on a 1,500-foot water slide!
Throughout the day, you'll spot monkeys, squirrels, butterflies, and birds like woodpeckers and toucans. Your local bilingual guide will show you the transition between tropical dry forest and rainforest and point out the various species of flora and fauna in the park.
The Buena Vista Combo is great for adults and families alike – or anyone looking for an adventure!
Guachipelin Combo Tour
The Guachipelin Combo tour also takes place in the Rincon de la Vieja National Park and includes the same activities as the Buena Vista Combo. The premise is the same - we'll pick you up in the morning and drive you to the park to begin your day of adventure.
This one is a little more adventurous and physically demanding, given that the Guachipelin Combo includes climbing and waterfall rappelling alongside the zip lining, horseback riding, mud baths, and thermal hot springs. One other difference is that the Guachipelin Combo doesn't include the water slide at the end.
Diamante Eco Adventure Park
The Diamante Eco Adventure Park is the newest combo tour in Guanacaste, located close to the coast, near the Riu resorts in Playa Matapalo. It offers a great adventure day out with minimal travel time to and from your hotel or rental on the beach.
A day at the Diamante Eco Adventure Park includes access to zip-lining, various beach water sports (kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding), horseback riding, and ATVs. There's also a wildlife sanctuary and cultural and botanical tours to learn about Costa Rican history, tradition, and nature.
The park offers a variety of day passes where you can mix and match the activities you want to enjoy. You'll also find three restaurants inside the park.
The zip line tour at the park has five cables and one 30-feet free-fall platform. It’s a 4,461-feet-long trip with ocean views to enjoy.
Other activities to enjoy are horseback riding and ATV riding. Rent one or the other and follow the trails through the hills with your guide to experience the area differently.
Nature lovers will enjoy the animal sanctuary at the park. It’s one of the largest rescue centers in Guanacaste, protecting several species recovered from various challenging situations. There are jaguars, sloths, ocelots, toucans, and other birds—also monkeys, reptiles, frogs, a butterfly garden, and more.
Get up and close with these creatures and learn about their habits and characteristics. The enclosures are designed to imitate the natural environment of each species as much as possible, and there are over a dozen licensed biologists ready to answer any questions.
If you want to see a specific animal being fed (like the sloths), it’s best if you head to the sanctuary first before doing anything else. Ask about feeding times to make sure you are in the right place at the right moment, as they may change throughout the month.
Diamante has dedicated a significant portion of its property to preserving native forests and vegetation species. The cultural experience at their Traditional House is getting close to Costa Rican cultural and natural history.
Walk around the botanical and medicinal gardens, and learn from enthusiastic connoisseurs about coffee brewing techniques, sugar cane extraction processes, and meal prepping. You even get to try out some of these centuries-old practices for yourself!
Playa Matapalo is a great place to relax and try some activities. Kayaks, stand-up paddles, and snorkeling gear are all available. So spend the rest of the day lounging in the sand and enjoying the beach.
